This is a nice, although steep, uphill walk through the woods across plenty of exposed rock. While suitable for most ages and abilities, it’s probably not for the very young. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes; the walk involves a lot of climbing on and over bare rocks. A trail branches off to the right (north) and leads right over the edge of the rock face; use caution as the drop-off is quite steep. The crest of Lantern Hill is about 470 feet above sea level, presenting distant views, on clear days, of Block and Fishers Islands, Montauk Point, Norwich, and the far away hills. Dominating the view from the summit is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum (worth a visit if you have the time) and its viewing spire, along with towering hotels and the casino. The mountain to the west is nearly sliced in half from a now-defunct silica quarry operation.
