This is a walk through woods along well-worn paths that lead around a swampy pond, over an exposed rock road, and past numerous jumbles of boulders and mysterious crevices. The short sections are suitable for all abilities, but some may tire on the longer ones—the entire circuit is roughly 3 miles. Once you park your car on Hell Hollow Road, head north on the sandy rock path into the woods on the blue-blazed Quinebaug Trail, which follows a woods road all the way to Flat Rock Road, about 1.8 miles from your start. Flat Rock Road is well named—the smooth, road-sized exposed rock resembles a whale’s back and the path follows it.
