This steady uphill walk along the Metacomet Trail leads you to mountain outlooks atop traprock ridges with views of the valley and far-flung mountains. Vantage points along the trail are column-like traprock with rock scree below. The columnar joints appear to have been raked by fingers. In early spring many woodland wildflowers, including lady slippers, blanket the area. In late spring wild columbine appears on sunny rock outcrops along the ridge top. The scenery is spectacular with no particular sights other than rolling mountains and the sprawling valley. The walk begins with several switchbacks as the trail ascends to a woods road. At about 0.5 mile watch for an old stone chimney and bench reminiscent of a past cabin off to the left (east). They’re about 100 feet off the trail, and if leaf cover isn’t too dense, they should be pretty easy to spot.
