This wonderful walk is suitable for all ages and can be combined with a visit to the historic Old New-Gate Prison for a memorable day trip. The walk starts from the prison parking lot, near a map board that gives details about the walk. The trail is a 0.8-mile walk through woods and wetlands. It is maintained by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division and is operated in cooperation with the Connecticut Historical Commission, which oversees the prison. The trail offers a fascinating look into wildlife habitat management practices, old field growth, and ways in which plantings can attract birds. The path leads through woods to the edge of a field, bends along the prison, but access to the old field area, and winds past Newgate Pond. A detailed brochure about the vegetation and wildlife is sometimes available from a map board at the start of the walk or from the visitors’ center, when it is open.
