In the summer, the resort is known as Spooner Lake State Park, and its 13,000 forested acres are home to a campground, catch-and-release trout fishing alpine lake, stunning hiking trails, and the well-known Flume Trail for mountain bikers. In the winter, however, under a blanket of snow, the area converts to Spooner Lake Cross-Country. Not as extensive as Royal Gorge Cross-Country, but offering similar amenities and smaller crowds, Spooner Lake Cross-Country maintains two backcountry ski-in cabins for rustic retreats. Snowshoeing and hiking are also encouraged around Spooner Lake, and whether you’re on skis, snowshoes, or foot, the views of Lake Tahoe are superb. It’s also the only ski area where you can catch the glow of sunrise on the hills across Tahoe; the area is open Tuesdays and Thursdays when the rooster crows for those who enjoy skinny-skiing in the early hours. This eTrail contains a thorough description of the resort including driving directions, mountain statistics, trail profiles, extensive lodging & dining information, travel tips, and much more.
