This is the most visited island in the Florida Keys (not counting Key Biscayne, which some people consider to be the first of the Keys). Key Largo feels different. It encompasses a watery part of Everglades National Park and is the land base of a famous coral-reef sanctuary. If you decide to visit Key Largo, realize that getting into and under the water is what makes the visit worthwhile. There are five island communities: Key Largo, Newport, Rock Harbor, Thompson, and Tavernier/Settlers Park. Plan to spend a whole day—or better yet, two or three days—here. There are two routes onto Key Largo; the road splits at Florida City and rejoins on the key. Each route has its advantages. You might drive down one way and then return the other, so you don’t miss anything. If you travel U.S. Highway 1, you’ll pass through very urban areas after reaching the key and get a lesson in how easy it is to lose the special character of a place.
