As intriguing as other regions of Florida are, with their springs, sinkholes, caverns, historical forts, tropical fish, and high sand dunes, the Everglades is the state at its most exotic. Many people think of the Everglades as a giant swamp, but it’s actually a shallow “river of grass” flowing 100 miles from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay. It’s also the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the nation, covering close to 5,000 square miles. Deep within this complex and fragile ecosystem of sawgrass and hammock live 14 endangered species, including the American crocodile, Florida panther, and manatee. The vast Everglades encompasses five national preserves —Biscayne Bay National Park (Miami Area), Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve (Southwest Region), the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (Palm Beach Area), and the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge (Southwest Region). The Everglades has been designated an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
