The bayside city of Sarasota is one of Florida’s premier cultural centers, with an impressive art museum and a community tradition of sponsoring the arts. The area’s gulfshore islands, especially Siesta Key and Casey Key, are lush family resorts. On City Island, an internationally known marine-science center is a popular and educational destination for families. Like most coastal areas in Florida with island-sheltered bayous, Sarasota Bay was a prized village site of early Indians, such as the Calusa, who harvested shellfish and left piles of shells to prove it. Modern Sarasota was founded at the end of the Seminole Wars. The Whitaker family moved to the waterfront in 1845, and others later followed. In the late 1890s, a Scottish family bought land for development. The name Sara Sota was already informally attached to another tiny settlement, but in 1902 the larger community of 52 voters appropriated it. A social leader and holder of a French Legion of Honor medal, Bertha Honore Potter Palmer, came to the area from Chicago to live part-time and bought extensive holdings. This spurred wealthy friends to join her.
