A Russian exile of noble birth built a railroad from Lake Monroe near Sanford westward to this area in 1888. According to local legend, he won a coin toss to name the area after his hometown. Sunshine and the railroads soon brought winter visitors, who liked to sail on Tampa Bay and visit islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Fishing is big business today, as is catering to vacationers who like the beaches and retirees who seek shade in the parks. This area on the sandy Pinellas Peninsula, across Tampa Bay from Tampa, supports about 15 waterfront communities that meld into one another south of Tarpon Springs. The busy region, dominated by St. Petersburg and Clearwater, attracts beach-goers from the greater Tampa area. There are several important children’s sites to see, including outstanding aquariums and an expansive science center. With this eTrail you will visit these family-friendly places: Clearwater Marine Aquarium, It's Our Nature, Moccasin Lake Nature Park, Heritage Village, Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area, Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, Native American Cultural Center, Great Explorations/The Pier, St. Petersburg Museum of History, Don CeSar Beach Resort, Boyd Hill Nature Park, Skywak State Fishing Pier, and Fort De Soto County Park.
