Although not directly on the gulf shore, the Tampa region owes its existence to water. The winding Hillsborough River courses through it on a 54-mile path from the Green Swamp to Hillsborough Bay, a side bayou of the biggest bay on the Florida Gulf Coast: Tampa Bay. In addition to river-related activities, the intensely urban Tampa area offers several fun and educational attractions, and some of those reflect its history. This area was an important campsite for native peoples for thousands of years. It’s almost certainly the spot where Hernando de Soto landed in 1539 to begin his expedition of conquest. Tampa was the place where Teddy Roosevelt collected his Rough Riders before leaving to fight in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Cuban émigrés came to the area to work in cigar factories and created a village, Ybor City, which remembers their heritage in a cigar-accented historic district. The colorful Spanish influence is most often tasted at fragrant bakeries, walk-up coffee stands, and restaurants. Tampa was once named Tanpa, possibly from a Calusa Indian word whose meaning is unknown. For a while, Tampa was also called Fort Brooke, for a federal fort located here in 1824. When the earlier name was restored, it was spelled with an “m.”
