Tarpon Springs, on the Gulf of Mexico about 30 miles north of St. Petersburg, is a cultural enclave visited by busloads of school children. The town is a port on the Anclote River, and it encompasses a lake and several bayous. The busy town dates to 1882, when it was a Victorian health resort. A mineral spring attracted visitors who hoped the waters had curative powers, which led to the construction of mansions and hotels. In about 1905, Greek immigrants began arriving to fish, build boats, and collect sponges from the sediment at the bottom of the gulf. Sponging had existed here previously, but now it became an important commercial venture. You can learn about the risks the hardy divers took, and see some of the early underwater breathing devices that were their lifelines. The sponge industry declined in the 1940s, in part because of water pollution and the rising popularity of synthetic sponges. But thanks to rigorous enforcement of environmental controls, the sponge beds are healthy once more. Simultaneously, natural sponges are in vogue again, with demand exceeding supply. Today, three sponge wholesalers operate from Tarpon Springs. From a tour boat, you can see their divers going about their work dressed in modern wetsuits.
