A family can stay happily busy in Orlando beyond visiting its famous theme park attractions. This is an exciting city set amid many lakes, with kid-friendly museums and parks. The area grew up around Fort Gatlin, which was built as a defense against Seminole Indians in 1838 and is now the site of a naval research lab. At least six historic districts with beautifully preserved homes, large shade trees, and brick streets present a side of the community that more and more visitors are discovering. The very lively Orange County Historical Museum tells about the mystery surrounding the origin of the city name and much more. Amid sprawling development, some communities around Orlando also have attractive town centers, such as Longwood and Winter Park. You can expect lovely urban parks, some with scenic lakes. Orlando is also not far from state parks with springs, picnic spots, and campgrounds. Since the Orlando area is so popular with families, avoid the traffic jams by taking free shuttles wherever they are offered and allow plenty of travel time to get where you are going.
