The historic railroad and mining town of High Springs, about 12 miles northwest of Gainesville on the Santa Fe River, is a fun place to eat, shop, and stay overnight in North-Central Florida. There are several private springs resorts here that welcome campers, as well as cabin resorts, fish camps, and country inns that also are appealing. Looking at the Ichetucknee River is like gazing into a deep, clear, natural aquarium. It is a national natural landmark with a reputation worldwide. The park encompasses a 6-mile stretch of the river. It’s easy to see fish and occasionally fish-eaters such as river otters. In the summer, a park tram returns visitors to the parking lot after they have floated downstream on inner tubes or rafts.
