Drive up and down a few red-clay hills under longleaf pines, past a few lakes full of largemouth bass, and your back-seat navigators will ask if you’ve left Florida. The interior of the Panhandle is often said to be Georgia and Alabama using an alias. This is a hunting and fishing region, with tree-shaded cabins perched by lakes and rivers. Country roads flanked by stands selling local honey and boiled peanuts take you through villages with quaint town squares. Increasingly, bird watchers and ecologists flock to the region for year-round plant study and fall raptor migration. Stunning bogs of carnivorous plants and cool, steep river ravines sheltering species native to the Appalachian Mountains are remarkable features of Panhandle parks. Geological features—ravines, a cavern you can walk through, a waterfall—are centerpieces of the Panhandle. Clear, flowing springs are more common east and south of here, but there are a few in this region that are well known. With this eTrail you will visit these family-friendly places: Blackwater River State Forest, Blackwater River State Park, Milton, Adventures Unlimited, DeFuniak Springs, Ponce de Leon Springs State Recreation Area, Vortex Spring, Morrison Springs, Cypress Springs, Falling Waters State Recreation Area, Florida Caverns State Park, Bear Paw Canoe Trails, and Torreya State Park.
