This May-to-September beach resort had its modern origins as Camp Walton, a Civil War outpost. Today, it attracts families from South Florida and nearby military bases for fun in the sun, including fishing from its 1,261-foot-long pier. Expect an unpretentious and sometimes overdeveloped swath of shore. The main part of the community is surrounded on three sides by water. It sits at the western end of Choctawhatchee Bay along a narrow section of Santa Rosa Sound. With this eTrail you will visit these family-friendly places: Indian Temple Mount Museum, Focus Science Center, Gulfarium, Liza Jackson Park, Brackin and John Beasley Wayside Parks, Gulf Island National Seashore (Okaloosa Unit), Rocky Bayou State Recreation Area, Destin Diner, The Back Porch / The Candymaker, June's Dunes, Henderson Beach State Recreation Area, James Lee County Park, Topsail Hill State Preserve, Donut Hole II, Gulf View Heights Beach / Goatfeathers, Baywoods Vacation Homes, Patrone's, Grayton Beach State Recreation Area, Seaside, Eden State Gardens, and Deer Lake State Park.
