This short but challenging hike leads to a spectacular view of the Naugatuck River valley. Twenty miles from suburban coastal Connecticut, the Naugatuck River valley is delightfully undeveloped—offering a sense of remoteness that belies its presence in a small, populous state—and easily accessible. The river is followed by the CT 8 freeway, the main north–south route in western Connecticut, and the Waterbury Branch of Metro-North’s New Haven Line. Between two of its stations, in the towns of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls, lies almost half of the 5,000-acre Naugatuck State Forest. Here road, river, and rail follow the narrow gorge between steep, rocky, dramatic peaks.
