Bear Rock is located within a section of the Conkaponset State Forest along the Mattabesett Trail. The rounded edifice of stone from which nature has carved the image of a bear’s head has drawn me for many years. It is not overly high or difficult to climb, and the animals and vegetation can be found in many places. Yet it is unique in a most pleasing, completely undefinable way. The path is blazed with pale blue marks. Turns are noted by two stacked blazes, with the uppermost blaze offset in the direction of the turn. From the pull-off on Harvey Road, near a small pond where spring peepers sing in April, head north uphill into a hardwood forest of oak, beech, and maple rising above an understory of witch hazel, mountain laurel, and isolated specimens of yellow star grass. Related to amaryllis, yellow star grass forms tufts of narrow, dark green leaves from which rise slender stems topped with beautiful golden yellow six-petaled flowers from spring to summer. If it is not in bloom, chances are you will never notice this little plant. But if you see it in flower, the lovely, delicate beauty of yellow star grass will stay in your memory for a long time.
