This loop trail on a 1,850-acre Nature Conservancy composite of parcels wends through forest with a primeval feel, attractive fern glades, along Lake Lillinonah, and to a ledge vista—an unusual but pleasing juxtaposition. From the kiosk at the trailhead, follow the light blue-blazed Silica Mine Trail into the forest of black birch, sugar maple, red oak, and American beech and up a gentle slope along a metamorphic schist outcrop on the left. Private property borders the preserve to the right. The path then levels out. In late spring and early summer the forest is alive with the songs of tufted titmice, scarlet tanagers, and red-eyed vireos. Schist rocks, with a high content of the mineral mica, glisten. Large white oaks and tulip trees are visible in the forest, and below them Christmas, New York, and hay-scented ferns. You also find hemlocks and black oaks. More dark gray outcrops protrude on the left. The trail swings in that direction and climbs steadily now, crossing a tiny trickle of water green with skunk cabbage. White ash and shagbark hickory join rather large black birch trees in the forest.
