Jesse Gerard Trail (blazed yellow on blue) begins at a sign across the road from the parking area; here, trail maps are sometimes available. From the woodland edge where clumps of daylilies blossom in July, enter a forest of white pine, hemlock, and maple. A few yards in, the trail forks left (north) and right (east). Turn left and begin a very steep climb up a bouldered slope. This section of trail looks more like parts of the White Mountains of New Hampshire than it does Connecticut, which means it is beautiful but rugged and strenuous. As you hike through jumbles of boulders and groves of oak, maple, and ash, look for wildflowers that grow in the sheltered crevices.
