Enter the preserve, owned by the Weir Farm Art Center—a private, nonprofit organization that supports Weir Farm National Historic Site—on a wide former woods road blazed yellow and flanked by stone walls. The dominant tree is sugar maple; you also see white ash and black birch, and evergreen Christmas fern. Descend gradually to an intermittent brook with abundant spicebush shrubs. On the left lies a seasonal wetland created by a 35-foot-long fieldstone dam across the brook, where moisture-loving sensitive and royal ferns thrive. Reach granite outcrops on both sides. Evergreen (marginal) wood fern caps the rocks.
