Just past the gatehouse, turn left and follow the pavement over a bridge across Kettletown Brook. You’ll soon reach the start of Brook Trail (blazed blue over yellow) on your right. Brook Trail bears left and descends into an idyllic hemlock- shaded rocky chasm. The highly oxygenated Kettletown Brook, hemmed in on the far side by a 30-foot-high gneiss rock wall, tumbles over a boulderlittered brook bed. Partridgeberry, Christmas fern, common polypody—the latter on rounded glacial boulders—and spinulose wood fern are among the few plants able to thrive in the subdued light. Follow the trail for 0.2 mile and reach the intersection with blue-over-red-blazed Miller Brook Connector Trail, which continues straight ahead. Bear left on Brook Trail as it leads up to and crosses the park road.
