From the trailhead up to the right, at the sign for yellow-blazed Silica Mine Trail, follow an old woods road steadily up into hemlock, black birch, and oak forest. Just shy of the crest the path turns right, narrows, and climbs. American beech, including a 3-foot-diameter behemoth left of the path, soon becomes common. Follow blazes along the hill’s contours. Level off under schist ledges and bear left around them.
