The parking area on River Road is not just a place to leave the car, but also an area to see attractive wildflowers. Queen Anne’s lace mingles with the yellow blossoms of false sunflower and the lavender flowers of wild bergamot. Wild bergamot, also called bee balm, is similar to the species cultivated in perennial gardens. The leaves have a minty fragrance. Bee balm is also called Oswego tea, in honor of the Oswego Indian Nation of New York. In Colonial times, American Indians used bee balm to make a soothing, tasty tea, which they shared with colonists, who used it as a substitute for East Indian tea. Bee balm’s whorls of lilac-colored blossoms bloom in summer and fall and are a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds.
