From the parking area, follow pale-blue-blazed Mohawk Trail right (south) past a large pine windfall. This area was once the heart of Cathedral Pines (see page 31); today the tree trunks of this formerly great forest are heaped one atop the other in disarray, a result of the train of tornadoes that swept through the hills in the summer of 1989. Beneath the trunks grow the first wave of trees and other plants that constitute a first-succession woodland. Black birch is joined by saplings of hemlock and red maple, as well as thickets of honeysuckle, raspberry, and elder. In the few remaining spaces, goldenrod, dandelion, wild strawberry, and trillium grow.
