From the parking area, follow light-blue blazes within a mixed grove of sugar maples. The trail enters a shady woodland with an herb layer of false Solomon’s seal, jack-in-the-pulpit, and jewelweed, a succulent herb that grows in shady, moist places. Jewelweed’s flowers are rusty orange or pale yellow and delicately hang from the plant on filament-like stems. When the leaves of the flowers are held underwater, the undersides of the leaves shine with a silvery color—the reason for the plant’s name. In late summer, the small, ripe seed capsules will pop open in your hand and hurl their seeds, a trait that gave the plant its other common name: touch-me-not. Jewelweed is also a traditional remedy for poison ivy.
