From the parking area on East Street (called Mount Washington Road in Connecticut), near the Connecticut–Massachusetts state line, red-blazed Mount Frissell Trail heads northwest on an old woods road, then turns left (south) into dense shrubby woods. The path crosses into Connecticut, setting a course toward the steep slopes of Round Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the state, just a dozen or so feet lower than famed Bear Mountain a short distance to the east. The trail’s easy grade changes quickly at the foot of Round Mountain. The path climbs steeply and becomes strenuous as it traces a course more northwestward toward the summit.
