One of the closest hikes to downtown Detroit is just across the river in Windsor, Ontario. The Ojibway Prairie complex maintains several nature units—which include prairie, wetlands, and forest—and some of the best loops are located behind the Ojibway Nature Centre. The route here combines several trails for an easy jaunt in the woods. The closest nature hike to downtown Detroit is not in Michigan at all. Detroit is the only major city in the United States (outside Alaska) that lies north of Canada. With Windsor just a short tunnel-drive (or bridge) away, you might imagine Detroiters popping across the border for a bite to eat or to catch a show. It’s certainly not always as easy as driving downriver to a metropark. The journey’s made more frustrating by customs officers who show a surprising amount of suspicion when you declare that the reason for your visit to Canada (or the United States, for that matter) is to “take a nature hike.” That said, there is good reason to cross the river. If you’re Canadian there are dozens of great hikes just a short drive away. If you’re from the United States, Windsor has some great hikes you have likely been missing.

Trails.com currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
