If an alien landed by North Capitol and L Streets NE in 1990 and again in 2015, it might not realize this was the same planet. That’s how drastically this newly named “NoMa” neighborhood has changed. Once shunned as a dangerous and decaying outpost, now pricey high-rise apartments, hotels, and offices are sprouting up almost everywhere. Start at the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro at Second and N Streets NE, which helped spur development when it opened in 2004. Unlike most Metrorail stations, this Red Line station was built with both public and private funds. When it debuted, Washington Post architectural columnist Roger K. Lewis said transformation of the area “stands a good chance of being substantially accomplished within the next 10 to 15 years.” He was right.
