U Street was once known as Black Broadway. Duke Ellington lived there. Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, and other legends played at its thriving clubs and theaters and stayed in its hotels during the days of racial segregation. Then, like some other parts of D.C., it sank into despair following the 1968 race riots.
