The lower Brandywine Creek is known for its rustic beauty, the artists and artisans who were drawn to the area, and the chemical company that was founded on its banks. Fortunately, the gunpowder mill that was built by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont in 1803 did not change the character of the area much. Over the years, concerned Delaware citizens have worked to ensure that the land along Brandywine Creek is preserved in its natural state for many generations to come.
