Loop around one of Rocky Mountain National Park’s well-known glacier-carved meadows while trying to imagine what it looked like at the turn of the century, when it was covered with dude ranches and fishing lodges. Moraine Park is a gently sloping square mile filled with green grasses and wildflowers, just inside Rocky Mountain National Park on the east side. The Big Thompson River winds through, and of course spiky 13,000-foot peaks are popping up on all sides, making this one of the showpiece spots of the state. Colorado road-trippers know the place well but usually drive right past it, gawking. Today we’ll become intimately acquainted with this magical meadow, walking most of the perimeter before heading through the tall grasses and even climbing up onto one of the lateral moraines that give the place its name.
