Tucked away on the west side of the San Luis Valley, Penitente Canyon is a unique gallery of southwestern history. Penitente Canyon was known as Capulin Canyon through much of the twentieth century, because of the abundant wild cherry bushes. Before that, during the nineteenth century, it was called CaƱon de Rajadero, because of a nearby sawmill. A devout sect of Roman Catholic monks, commonly called Los Penitentes, started to use the secluded canyon as a retreat after 1918. The name Penitente Canyon was cemented in the public consciousness only in the mid-1980s, after some dedicated Hermanos Penitentes conspired to paint the Virgin of Guadalupe high up on the canyon wall.
