This route includes a pleasant cruise on a trail that was constructed as a present from William Palmer to his wife, Queen, so she would have a nice place to ride her horses. No history of Colorado’s Great White Men would be complete without a chapter on General William Jackson Palmer. Unfortunately for him and us, his very compelling wife, Queen, did not stick around long enough to steal the show. General Palmer started his post–Civil War career as treasurer of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, which completed a line to Denver in 1870 but failed to secure funding to build the road west along the southern route that Palmer recommended.
