From its canyon-rim beginnings, the Piedra River Trail follows a gentle descent through towering cliffs, along inviting pools, and into grassy meadows. Boulder outcrops and footpaths to the river happily divert kids hoping to find signs of river otters. The destination for the first 1.5-mile section of the Piedra River Trail is a large meadow framed by the Piedra River and Williams Creek, an ideal setting for beginning backpackers—with a fishing pole! Similar sites are available east of the trail junction with the Piedra Stock Trail at 2.8 miles. Find the trailhead in a meadow adjacent to the parking lot’s southwest side. Within 100 yards, knee-high sandstone outcrops on your right serve as stops for tightening shoelaces. However, the river’s first of many pools attracts attention to the left, where dramatic desert varnish stripes the cliffs above a small waterfall.
