During this guided walk, it’s easy to imagine the era when the Ancestral Puebloans (formerly called Anasazi, see Hike 95) occupied this high point, grinding corn in the shade of a juniper tree, performing rituals in a smoke-?lled kiva, keeping watch over their land from the twin spires known as Chimney Rock. The high mesa of Chimney Rock holds sixteen individual sites, fourteen of which are residential. On the tour you will visit four of these sites that have been excavated and stabilized: the Great Kiva and the Pit House on the Great Kiva Trail, and the Ridge House and the Great House on the Pueblo Trail. Other sites have been excavated and studied, then reburied to protect them and the valuable information they hold.
