This paved, wheelchair-accessible trail to an ancient dwelling site overlooking several mountain ranges will delight children of all ages. Interpretive signs along the way identify the local plants and explain how the Ancestral Puebloan people (formerly called Anasazi) used them about 1000 years ago. See the following hike (Hike 95) for an overview of the Ancestral Puebloan culture. The trail to the Escalante Pueblo begins at the picnic site just west of the Anasazi Heritage Center. This gently graded 0.5-mile trail ascends through stands of scrub oak, pinyon, and juniper. Yucca and cactus are also part of the undergrowth here. All the plants you see on this trail were important to the people who once lived here. Imaginative young hikers might hear stone tools grinding corn or children chasing a wild turkey through the brush.
