A ten-year-old told me, “It’s a trail covered in sparkly fairy dust that goes to a cool, shiny cave.” Her mom added, “The trail to Mica Mine gives me a good dose of sandstone serenity.” Considered Grand Junction’s classic, and no doubt prettiest hike, the trail follows Ladder Canyon’s shaded streambed to the Mica Mine. It’s best experienced in spring or fall, when the stream flows or the cottonwoods glow in shades of gold. However, a cloudy, breezy summer day can be comfortable in the canyon, as it was during our midday hike in July. From the parking lot, follow the wide, rocky path as it descends 0.1 mile to the junction of the Rough Canyon and Mica Mine trails. Head right on the Mica Mine Trail, entering the leafy canyon bottom. Throughout the hike the trail threads stands of cottonwood, sage, pinyon, and juniper, edging the stream and then following a less rocky route.
