Cataract Falls, visible from the trailhead, lures hikers around mountain-fed Lower Cataract Lake and through sun-drenched meadows to pass into the cool, dark corridors of an old-growth forest. The lake’s beautiful serenity, especially in the morning, sets the tone for quiet discoveries in the brooks, brush, and shore along the trail. Encourage your crew to watch for birds, insects, and animal tracks along waterways. Don’t let the numerous spur trails leading in the direction of the falls confuse you; rocks or logs have blocked most of them. Before reaching the spurs, watch on the trail’s right side for a four-hug-wide ponderosa pine snag. The dead tree provides homes and food for birds, rodents, and insects. Those lingering here watch forest animals using the tree.
