This creekside trail takes hikers on a quiet, sometimes roaring passage through the varied ecosystems of Maroon Bells. Less hiked than its trailhead partner, Maroon Lake Trail (Hike 35), the Maroon Creek Trail heads downvalley through dense conifer forest, rocky slopes, wildflower meadows, and aspen glens and over several streams. Before heading out, check the bus schedule to time your arrival either here or at the trail’s end, East Maroon Wilderness Portal. Beginning at the outlet of West Maroon Creek from Maroon Lake, take in the view of Colorado’s signature mountains, North Maroon Peak and South Maroon Peak. Turn left to cross the footbridge and bear left into a dense conifer forest. Bright green patches of moss blanket the forest floor here, forming a velvety crazy quilt your companions will want to feel. During my late-August hike here, a variety of mushrooms flocked the forest floor. Let kids know that mushrooms are the fruits of mycelium, a vast underground network of tiny white threads called hyphae.
