The transformation of a chemical manufacturing complex into a wildlife refuge is a feat as amazing as the destination itself. Rocky Mountain Arsenal is now a 17,000-acre prairie habitat where families watch bison graze, prairie dogs perch, and eagles soar overhead. It’s a destination where kids dissect owl pellets, hop on a hayride, and “walk on water” to a fine fishing spot. Denver’s nearest island of wildlife serves as a sanctuary for 330 animal species—and countless harried grown-ups. The action starts at the visitor center, which opened in May 2011. At the headquarters for one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country, kids stand nose-to-nose with a stuffed bison, then explore such hands-on displays as a migration mapping puzzle and a Cold War–era “explosion-proof telephone.” The center’s engaging exhibits show how the one-time bison territory was homesteaded, then became a toxic site of chemical technologies. A roost of eagles spotted here in 1986 triggered the Environmental Protection Agency to begin the renewal that led to today’s stewardship of the land by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
