Blacksmith Peak’s northwest face is a great expanse of granite. It is especially impressive from the upper reaches of Blacksmith Canyon, resembling a huge shark’s tooth stuck in the glacier. Following the first free ascent of the route, Dave Nettle described the route as “the most striking line on the biggest face on the peak.” This side of the peak was the site of a flurry of climbing activity by Yosemite Valley veterans in the early 1970s. In July 1973, two different parties approached the face on the same weekend.
