The Wheeler Survey was responsible for giving Matterhorn Peak its somewhat inappropriate name. On the first ascent of the peak, Lincoln Hutchinson wrote, “That the name is a poor one there can be no doubt, as there is only the barest suggestion of resemblance to the wonderful Swiss mountain after which it is called.” However, this is still a very attractive peak, and it dominates the view of the jagged Sawtooth Ridge. The most striking feature on the peak is the distinctive north arete rising above the small glacier at its base to the sharp summit.
