The 1,200 foot southwest face of Mt. Conness is an impressive sight from many places in the Tuolumne Meadows area. This wall was first attempted by a group of Bay area climbers led by Don Goodrich and Krehe Ritter. Goodrich was a skilled climber and had made a number of first ascents in Yosemite Valley. However, his attempt on the wall ended in tragedy when he pulled off a loose block while leading the second pitch and was killed in the fall. A memorial plaque has been placed at the base of the route, providing a sobering reminder of the potentially dangerous nature of backcountry climbing.
