Mt. Ritter is the highest peak in the Ritter Range and its summit has been the goal of mountaineers since the days of Clarence King and John Muir. The relatively remote west side of the peak is home to a large glacier bordered by the massive west face of Mt. Ritter. The west summit of the peak, Peak 12,344, caps the long and jagged southwest ridge, which rises from the canyon of the North Fork of the San Joaquin River. In his 1976 guidebook, Steve Roper noted, “It is entirely possible that it was the last major Sierra summit to be reached.”
