Norman Clyde wrote about Temple Crag, “It is doubtful that there is a more beautiful and striking ‘crag-mountain’ in the Sierra. Its northern and north-eastern faces are sheer precipices varied by numbers of spirey, turret-like pinnacles, beautifully placed.” The pinnacles and aretes radiate from the summit and are accentuated by early morning shadows and dreamily illuminated by moonlight. Known as the Celestial Aretes, these features were named by Don Jensen and his wife Joan from their base camp located above Third Lake.
