Keeler Needle is the stunning pinnacle located just south of the east face of Mt. Whitney. Warren Harding was the hardest of Yosemite Valley hardmen in the late 1950s and 1960s. He did manage to pry his attention away from the Valley’s plum wall routes to make this first ascent of the east face a year after making the historic ascent of the Nose on Yosemite’s El Capitan. The year before, Harding had also climbed the southwest face route on Mt. Conness. An era of difficult big wall climbing in the High Sierra had begun.
