The Nordic Lodge at Mount Shasta Board & Ski Park is Ashland’s closest full-service Nordic ski area. Though part of a large resort, the cross-country trails are far from the alpine activity and offer a tranquil atmosphere. The mix of easy, intermediate, and challenging trails provides some of the best variety in the region. Trails are wide and grooming is excellent for skating and classic skiing. Trail fees are higher than at Oregon ski areas, but the extra dollars will be a small part of total expenses for most ski trips. Annual snowfall is more than 10 feet and the Nordic Lodge takes advantage of it, staying open until early May. Mount Shasta, a dormant volcano, erupted only 200 years ago. Native Americans called the mountain Ieka. European visitors dubbed it Shasta. Mount Shasta legends abound. Stories of the mystical race of Lemurians living within the mountain have persisted since the 1880s. More “conventional” stories about Bigfoot, leprechauns, and other beings are common. The only mysterious creatures skiers will encounter are snow snakes, which are to blame for most embarrassing and otherwise unexplainable tumbles into the snow. Track Quality: Excellent classic skiing, excellent skating
