Letchworth State Park, just 45 miles south of Rochester, comprises 14,300 acres of scenic magnificence. The precipitous walls of the gorge, the Genesee River winding below, the plunge and spray of dramatic waterfalls, and the lush forest all contribute to make this park one of the most notable examples of waterfalls and scenery in the United States. Within the park the Genesee River roars over three major waterfalls, cutting into the dramatic cliffs that approach 600 feet in height. The middle waterfall is 107 feet high. Carved by the river, the majestic gorge snakes through the 17-mile-long park, providing awesome views at many over-looks. In winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and tubing are fun activities held near Trailside Lodge. Classifying and describing all the multiuse trails within the vast trail system might be considered a work in progress. Letchworth State Park has developed a complex network of cross-country ski trails within its narrow borders. Fees: yes, on weekends.
