The Bear Swamp State Forest trail system was developed with volunteer help in the 1980s. Improvements were made in the 1990s and continue today, with work crews provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The improvements include the construction of a fine kiosk for the registration logbook at the west entrance (Hartnett Road). The Bear Swamp Trails have become increasingly popular, providing enjoyable tours with lovely views of Bear Swamp Creek, Skaneateles Lake, Grout Brook, and the Glen Haven Valley. It is a favorite destination of knowledgeable winter trail users of the region, as these trails often are snow-covered when other trails are bare.Surface quality: Ungroomed, user packed.
