Unique and sensitive environments, valuable for their many rare geological and vegetation features, characterize Minnewaska State Park Preserve. The preserve is situated in the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain Ridge, which rises more that 2,000 feet above sea level. The ridge dominates the Park Preserve and its immediate environs, as well as the rolling agricultural landscape of the surrounding towns and hamlets below. The Shawangunk and nearby Catskill Mountains have been attracting tourists and artists for more than a century, spurred by the completion of railroads linking the area to the Hudson River and New York City. In winter Minnewaska Preserve opens about 20 miles of old carriage trails exclusively for cross-country skiing. Some of these are award-winning mountain bike trails. Walking, hiking, and snowshoeing are permitted on the hiking trails and trails off the Awosting parking lot and Peter’s Kill area. The unusually wide ski trails are machine rolled and tracked for classic (kick and glide) skiing, with most sections wide enough for skate skiing in the middle between two sets of tracks. The trails are blazed with color-coded trail markers and directional signs. Dogs are not allowed on the ski trails. Surface quality: Machine groomed (doubel tracked). Fees: yes.
